What is Spine Tumor?

A spine tumor is an abnormal growth that develops within the spinal canal or the bones of the spine. These tumors can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

Types of Spine Tumors

  • Primary spinal tumors: Originate in the spine.
    • Intramedullary tumors: Grow within the spinal cord.
    • Extramedullary intradural tumors: Develop in the membranes covering the spinal cord.
    • Extradural tumors: Occur outside the dura mater (outermost layer of the spinal cord).
    • Vertebral tumors: Grow in the bones of the spine.
  • Metastatic spinal tumors: Cancer that has spread to the spine from another part of the body.

Symptoms of Spine Tumors

Symptoms can vary depending on the location and size of the tumor. Common symptoms include:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs
  • Weakness in the arms or legs
  • Difficulty walking
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control

    Treatment

Treatment options depend on the type, size, and location of the tumor, as well as the patient’s overall health. Treatment may include:

    • Surgery to remove the tumor
    • Radiation therapy
    • Chemotherapy
    • Steroids to reduce swelling
    • Pain management

Spine tumor surgery is a complex procedure aimed at removing the tumor while preserving neurological function. The specific approach depends on the tumor’s location, size, and type.

    Types of Spine Tumor Surgery

    • Open surgery: This involves a larger incision to access the tumor.
    • Minimally invasive surgery: Smaller incisions and advanced techniques are used to reduce trauma.
    • Endoscopic surgery: Using a small camera and instruments to access the tumor through tiny incisions.

    Post-Operative Care

Recovery from spine tumor surgery can be lengthy and requires careful management. It often includes:
    • Pain management
    • Physical therapy
    • Monitoring for complications
