What is Trigeminal neuralgia?
It is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, responsible for sensations in the face. It’s often described as a sudden, intense, electric shock-like pain on one side of the face. Even simple actions like brushing your teeth or applying makeup can trigger these excruciating pain attacks.
Symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia
- Intense, sharp pain: Often described as electric shock-like or stabbing pain.
- Pain triggers: Activities like chewing, talking, or touching the face can provoke attacks.
- Episodic pain: Pain often occurs in short, intense bursts.
- Affected area: Typically affects one side of the face, but can sometimes involve both sides.
Causes of Trigeminal Neuralgia
The exact cause is often unknown, but it’s believed to be related to irritation or compression of the trigeminal nerve. Possible causes include:
- Blood vessel compressing the nerve
- Multiple sclerosis
- Tumors
- Facial injuries
Treating Trigeminal Neuralgia
Managing trigeminal neuralgia often involves a combination of treatments. The goal is to find the most effective approach for each individual.
- Medications: Anti-seizure medications & Pain relievers
- Medical Procedures: Nerve blocks, Radiofrequency ablation, Glycerol injection, Balloon compression
- Surgery: Microvascular decompression (MVD): This involves moving a blood vessel away from the trigeminal nerve to relieve pressure.
Surgery can offer significant benefits for those with severe trigeminal neuralgia that hasn’t responded to medical treatments.
- Long-term pain relief: Many patients experience significant pain reduction or elimination after surgery.
↓ - Reduced medication reliance: Successful surgery can reduce or eliminate the need for pain medications.
↓ - Improved quality of life: Freedom from debilitating pain can dramatically enhance daily activities and overall well-being.
